FACES in FOCUS: Roberta GonzalesRide with CBS5’s Roberta Gonzalez in Bike 4 Breath 2010You’ve taken her weather advice for years. You may have packed your umbrella or sunscreen due to her weighty predictions. On July 10th you will have a chance to ride along with her. For the past five years CBS5 weatherwoman Roberta Gonzalez has been a participant in the Breathe California’s Bike 4 Breath ride. Her personal connection to lung disease inspires her to bring attention to the important work Breathe California is doing. “My youngest son contracted RSV before his first birthday and was gravely ill,” She recalled. “The Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a virus that causes mild respiratory infections such as colds and coughs in adults but in young children can produce severe pulmonary diseases including bronchiolitis and pneumonia. After he came out of the hospital, he developed severe asthma.” Roberta and several hundred other riders will help Breathe California continue its asthma outreach and air quality education which has been at the forefront of its programs for years. This past school year Breathe partnered with the San Francisco Unified School District to promote the “Tools for Schools” program. The program educated students on indoor air quality issues and encouraged students to take proactive steps to improve the air quality at their schools. As for the ride, Roberta encourages all riders to take the whole Bike 4 Breath experience in…slowly. “Don't bolt through the ride, rather enjoy it! Soak up the surroundings and embrace the reason which brought you out to help Breathe California. Before the end of the day, make a new friend.” If Roberta's story has inspired you, you can register to ride on July 10th, or support Breathe California's work with an online donation.
